Frequently asked questions
Is Gamoo OS free?
Yes. Downloading, installing and using it costs nothing — no plan, no subscription, no account required.
Is it really open source?
Yes. Gamoo OS is free software under the GPLv3: you can read, study, change and share it.
What does “beta” mean here?
The system installs and runs, but it still has rough edges and things will change between builds. Back up first, and prefer a spare disk or computer over the one you depend on.
Can I play my Steam games?
The image ships with free software only. Steam, extra codecs and NVIDIA drivers are your choice to add after installing — they are not bundled, because we only distribute what we are allowed to.
What hardware do I need?
A 64-bit PC (x86_64) that boots in UEFI mode. The full list is on the download page.
My PC only boots in legacy BIOS mode. Can I install?
Not with this installer — it is UEFI-only. Most PCs from the last decade support UEFI in their firmware settings.
Does Gamoo OS collect my data?
No. Local-first, zero telemetry — reports stay on your machine. The system sends no usage statistics to Gamoo.
Is Guardian Mode in the beta?
Its foundation is: separate child accounts that can't install software or change the system. Screen time, safe browsing, the age-based catalog and the parent dashboard are on the roadmap — see Guardian Mode.
How do I install it?
Follow the install guide: verify the download, write it to a USB drive, boot from it and run the installer.
Parents: there's a separate set of questions on the Guardian Mode page.
